"Hoy se cumplen 184 años de la usurpación de las Islas Malvinas. El 3 de enero de 1833, fuerzas militares del Reino Unido expulsaron de allí a la población y autoridades argentinas legítimamente constituidas, reemplazándolas por súbditos británicos. La República Argentina protestó inmediatamente ese acto de fuerza ilegítimo, sin consentirlo en momento alguno.

Desde el inicio mismo de su existencia como nación independiente, la República Argentina exteriorizó a través de actos de gobierno la firme voluntad política de ejercer su soberanía efectiva en los territorios australes y espacios marítimos heredados de España.
Hoy, el pueblo y el gobierno argentino reafirman una vez más los imprescriptibles derechos de soberanía de la República Argentina sobre las Islas Malvinas, Georgias del Sur, Sandwich del Sur y los espacios marítimos circundantes.
La Cláusula Transitoria Primera de la Constitución Nacional consagra el objetivo permanente e irrenunciable de recuperar el ejercicio pleno de la soberanía sobre dichos territorios y espacios marítimos, de conformidad con los principios del derecho internacional y respetando el modo de vida de los habitantes de las Islas Malvinas. Este objetivo es una política de Estado y responde al anhelo de todo el pueblo argentino.
En 1965, con la adopción de la Resolución 2065 (XX), la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas reconoció la existencia de una situación colonial en las Islas Malvinas, y tomó nota de una disputa entre la Argentina y el Reino Unido por la soberanía de dichas islas, instando a ambos gobiernos a solucionarla a través de negociaciones bilaterales. En ese mismo sentido se han adoptado otras nueve resoluciones de la Asamblea General, así como resoluciones anuales del Comité Especial de Descolonización de las Naciones Unidas.
Asimismo, de conformidad con la resolución 31/49 de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas, la República Argentina insta al Reino Unido a que se abstenga de desarrollar actos unilaterales en el área en disputa, en particular los relacionados con la exploración y explotación de recursos naturales renovables y no renovables.
Nuestra región ha sido unánime en su respaldo a los legítimos derechos de soberanía de la República Argentina a través de diversos pronunciamientos de las cumbres de Presidentes de los Estados Partes del MERCOSUR y Estados Asociados, de la Unión de Naciones Suramericanas (UNASUR), y de la Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC). Asimismo, otros foros multilaterales y regionales se han manifestado a favor de la reanudación de las negociaciones tales como la Organización de Estados Americanos, el Grupo de los 77 y China, la Cumbre de Países Sudamericanos y Países Arabes (ASPA), la Cumbre de Países Sudamericanos y Africanos (ASA), y la Cumbre Iberoamericana.
La República Argentina reitera su firme compromiso con la solución pacífica de las controversias y el respeto del derecho internacional, e invita al Reino Unido a profundizar el diálogo iniciado a lo largo del último año con miras a reanudar las negociaciones que permitan encontrar a la mayor brevedad posible una solución pacífica y definitiva a la disputa de soberanía sobre las Islas Malvinas, Georgias del Sur, Sandwich del Sur y los espacios marítimos circundantes, conforme a los reiterados llamados de la comunidad internacional.

Today marks the 184th anniversary of the usurpation of the Malvinas Islands. On 3 January 1833, United Kingdom military forces expelled the Argentine population and authorities legitimately established in the islands, replacing them with British subjects. The Argentine Republic immediately protested this illegitimate act of force and at no time consented to it.
From the very beginning of its existence as an independent country, the Argentine Republic expressed, through Government acts, its strong political will to exercise its effective sovereignty over the southern territories and maritime spaces inherited from Spain.
Today, the Argentine people and Government once again reaffirm the imprescriptible sovereignty rights of the Argentine Republic over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas.
The First Transitory Clause of the Argentine Constitution establishes the permanent and non-renounceable objective of recovering full exercise of sovereignty over said territories and maritime spaces, in accordance with the principles of international law and respecting the way of life of the inhabitants of the Malvinas Islands. This objective is a State policy and embodies an aspiration of the entire Argentine people.
In 1965, through the adoption of Resolution 2065 (XX), the UN General Assembly recognized the existence of a colonial situation in the Malvinas Islands and took note of the sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom, calling upon the two governments to solve it through bilateral negotiations. Along the same lines, another nine resolutions of the General Assembly have been adopted, as well as annual resolutions by the United Nations Special Committee on Decolonization.
Moreover, in accordance with Resolution 31/49 of the UN General Assembly, the Argentine Republic urges the United Kingdom to refrain from engaging in unilateral acts in the area under dispute, particularly in connection with the exploration and exploitation of renewable and non-renewable natural resources.
Our region has unanimously supported the legitimate sovereignty rights of the Argentine Republic through several statements at the Summits of Presidents of the MERCOSUR Member and Associate States, the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). Likewise, other multilateral and regional fora have declared their support for the resumption of negotiations, including the Organization of American States, the Group of 77 and China, the Summit of South American-Arab Countries (ASPA), the Africa-South America Summit (ASA), and the Ibero-American Summit.
The Argentine Republic reiterates its strong commitment to the peaceful resolution of disputes and respect for international law, and invites the United Kingdom to strengthen the dialogue started last year, with a view to resuming negotiations aimed at finding, as soon as possible, a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas, as repeatedly requested by the international community.
